There is no Such Thing as a Standard Elf Costume!

Costume parties are always a lot of fun, and the guests that attend often come up with ingenious ideas. You have been invited to a costume party, and you are unsure of what to wear. If you want a unique, yet relaxed outfit, look no further than the versatile elf costume.

Elf Costume Idea #1: A North Pole Elf

If you are attending a Christmas costume party, a North Pole elf costume is an excellent idea! For this particular elf costume, you will need a red outfit. For a man, this should be red britches and a red vest (the shirt under the vest should be green). For a woman, this could be a short red dress.

As for accessories for this particular elf costume, men should wear white and red socks, and red shoes. Women can wear any kind of pantyhose that they think matches their outfit, and could wear red flats, or red high heels. Both men and women should also have the obligatory Santa/stocking hat!

Elf Costume Idea #2: A Woodland Elf

This particular costume idea is one that works especially well for any costume party. While men can wear a costume of this nature, it is meant more for women. Begin by getting a long wig (if you do not have long hair already). Next, get a wispy dress (preferably a dress with a lightly shredded skirt).

When it comes to accessories, the shoes should be as invisible as possible. Clear flats or sandals work best. Some people go so far as to wear no shoes, but if you choose this option, be mindful of safety. The other two interesting accessories are a wand, and wings, both of which can be easily gotten at a costume shop.

For More Information

If you would like more ideas on how to create your own elf outfit, all you have to do is search the internet. There are many different websites that are sure to give you some interesting ideas about your look, complete with makeup.

When it comes to makeup, the key material for both men and women is glitter. You can get glitter body makeup and lightly apply it all over your face for an interesting look. For women, you can also incorporate eye shadow and blush in an entire range of different colors. Whether you are a man or a woman, you are sure to put together an excellent elf outfit with the proper research!

Dance the Night Away in a Fabulous Dance Costume

If you take the time to flip through the television stations, you will eventually come to a station where people are singing and dancing in a competition or for pure entertainment. Singing and dancing reality shows are one of the most popular television shows on TV.

Everyone loves to watch people dress up in sleezy or sexy dance costumes and shake their booties to their favorite songs. With these dance shows so popular, why not consider wearing a dance costume for your next costume party? A dance costume would be a very fun and exciting costume that will surely turn the heads of everyone in the room.

How to Create a Fabulous Dance Costume

One can very easily create a dance costume that is out of this world. You can simply use a t-shirt and a pair of shorts and decorate with them with many beautiful and sparkly rhinestones, gems, glitter, laces, sequins, and other adornments. You will want to make it very shiny and glittery because the majority of all dance costumes are designed to catch someone's eye.

Another idea is to take an old bathing suit and decorate with the same types of adornments. Many dance costumes are very sleezy and sexy and will show off many parts of the dancer's body (for both male and females). No matter what type of clothes you choose to decorate, you will definitely want to make sure that it is shiny and eye catching.

Next, you will need to get a pair of dance shoes. The type of dance costume you wear will determine the type of shoes you will wear. A ballerina will want to wear ballet shoes, a ballroom dancer or Latin dancer will want to wear heels, and a hip hop dancer will want to wear boots or tennis shoes.

Many shoes stores usually have a nice selection of dance shoes to choose from. Some dancers even go bare foot. So, if you really do not want to wear shoes, then it is okay to be bare foot. You may also want to add a pair of leggings or leg warmers for the added dancer look.

Wearing a dance costume to a costume party is a great idea. It is something shining and sparkly that will catch the eyes of everyone in the room. If you are really brave at the costume party, you may even attempt to demonstrate a dance. Your audience will love it.

Bringing Home the Love with a Cupid Costume

Although people often forget that it is the source of many popular stories and fairytales, Greek mythology remains one of the most prevalent forces in literature, film and fantasy in general. The tales of the Greek gods and goddesses are filled with erotic love and adventure, mystical creatures and powerful immortals. However, many of those original myths have been watered down and re-adopted. One of these myths, the myth of Cupid, is especially popular, but especially different.

Cupid, the son of Aphrodite, is often pictured as the bringer of love—however, in the original myth he was a destructive imp of a child. The modern myth is one of cuteness and innocence—Cupid flies around, often portrayed as a little baby, shooting arrows of love at unsuspecting couples. This if often the model of the Cupid costume. And even though this was not the original intention of the Greek myth, the Cupid costume embodies the lasting image Cupid himself has made on the public mind.

Aiming for the Heart

A Cupid costume often consists of a little set of wings, a set of arrows, a bow, a quiver and a cloth. The cloth serves as a kind of diaper—since Cupid is often portrayed as an innocent baby, even when adults dress as Cupid, they take on that role. Once dressed in a Cupid costume, the individual, usually a man, gets to walk around, shooting arrows of love. The wings especially are the focal point of the costume. Cupid wings are usually small and fluffy—they are not gossamer or flimsy. Cupid is often portrayed as having small wings for his body, and this often carries over into the Cupid costume.

Most costumes are used for Halloween, or for other kinds of costume balls. Halloween is a holiday of monsters and fear, and the mix of costumes is usually eclectic, ranging from vampires to Power Rangers. However, the Cupid costume, while a perfect fit for any party of Halloween celebration, has one other use most costumes do not: Valentine's Day.

A Cupid costume is often a popular choice around the February holiday by people who want to be cute and add a little fun to the office or workplace. This helps to maintain the image of Cupid as the bearer of love, and his eternal connection to Valentine's Day is perpetuated by his appearance throughout February. But in the end, Cupid is a good boy, and even though the original myth was a little mischievous, it is still the perfect story, and the perfect costume, for the celebration of love.

Costume Wigs Are Fun to Wear!

Some people do not do much when it comes to picking out a costume. They just pick something basic, and put it on. This is rather discouraging, because the entire point of wearing a costume is to transform into another character. Thus, to add a little extra something to any costume, a person is going to need a costume wig.

Costume Wigs Have a Long History

Indeed, people not only used to wear costume wigs for special occasions, but wigs in general were a daily part of life – especially for European aristocracy. Costume wigs were meant to cover up thinning hair most notably.

Nowadays, costume wigs are just for fun, and there are many choices when it comes to that as well. In general, there are specific wigs for specific outfits. For example, if a man wanted to go as George Washington, he would choose the standard ponytail wig from the 1700s.

Another popular era that inspires many costume wigs for both men and women are the 1980s. Of course, many men love to dress up as rock stars, and as such the wigs they choose include ones with a punk rock look. Also, the comical mullet works for both men and women who want an 80s look.

When it comes to women, there are many different wigs that they can choose from, depending on the time period of their costume. For example, if a woman wants to be Lady Godiva or Rapunzel, she will need a very long wig.

If a woman wants to be something from the Renaissance, she has the option of wearing along wig, or a wig that has a decorative bun. Additionally, the decorative bun look is ideal if a woman is getting a costume from the Victorian era.

As time went on, hairstyles changed, and so it comes as no surprise that wig styles changed as well. The woman who chooses to go as a flapper from the 1920s, for example, will need to get a short, bobbed wig.

For more information on wigs, all you have to do is go to your local costume shop. It should be noted that wigs often come in different sizes, so you might have to try on a couple of them before you find one that fits comfortably. Also, if you are wearing a wig over long hair, you might need a cap to place over your real hair, so that the wig looks as realistic as possible.

Temporary Fantasy: Costume Rental

Many people desire to be owners. Whether it is a house or a car, they want to say they own it, that it is their possession and that no one can take it away from them. Yes, some people rent apartments, and others lease cars, but a large percentage of adults simply do not want to share. However, there are many perks to renting.

For instance, variety is the spice of life, and leasing a car for a few years, and then leasing a different one, can definitely keep some anticipation and excitement in life versus owning the same car for decades. Also, for some items, owning is actually counterproductive and wasteful—if an item is only going to be used once or twice, there is no point in spending more money to own it. Cleaning supplies, moving equipment, furniture—if it is for a special occasion, renting is definitely wiser.

Costume rental is another perfect option, and the superior choice to buying a costume. There are many factors involved with choosing and wearing a costume. Costumes are usually only worn once or twice a year, around Halloween or some other costume party. They depend on the size of the person, meaning they cannot be worn year after year.

They also serve a specific purpose—fun and excitement. Some costumes are only funny or memorable in a specific year, based on what may have happened in popular culture. Costume wearers also do not want to dress up the same way year after year, and their friends also want to see something new. Costume rental is the perfect alternative to buying costumes, as it saves money, frustration and brings the true meaning of dressing up to life.

Picking and Choosing

Costume rental allows an individual to always try something new. Instead of wearing the same outfit year after year, he or she can mix it up and try something different. Also, a lot of people are unable to afford to buy really intricate costumes—instead they buy cheaper, less detailed costumes and reuse them. Costume rental allows people to wear a better costume, and still save money, as the cost of renting a costume is cheaper than the cost of buying a cheap costume.

And in the end, cheap costumes often do not last for years—people end up having to buy new costumes anyway. Costume rental is the perfect solution for people looking to save money, and for people looking to enjoy Halloween, and other special occasions, to the utmost.

Finding Costume Patterns

Consider yourself fortunate if you know how to sew. Not only can you save money by sewing your own clothes and costumes, you know that the quality is there in every piece you make, in the materials you purchase and in your craftsmanship.

Free Online Costume Patterns

On the Internet you will find many sites that allow you to print your own free costume patterns for children and adults. HGTV, the home and garden television network, offers many hours of craft-based programming. Because of the network's emphasis on crafts and home arts, the network's web site provides free printable costumes.

You can use these costume patterns to make your own skeleton, ghoul, duck, or wizard costumes for children or adults. HGTV also offers costume patterns for toddler and baby costumes like a mermaid, rubber ducky, bunny, cow, and sheep.

Another web site, called the Catt Box, offers fun costumes in an Elvis Presley theme. At the Catt Box, you will find costume patterns for Elvis capes and collars, and ideas for creating an entire look as an Elvis impersonator.

Kid's Domain offers a fun variety of costume patterns. Make your own Halloween or pretend play costumes, like M&M candies, grapes, or traditional scary Halloween characters: witches, eyeballs, ghosts, and scarecrows.

If you want to make a costume that looks like a fictional character, you will find costume patterns online to make everything from the entire character list of the Rocky Horror Picture Show to the doughboy hat that the Pillsbury doughboy wears. Superheroes like Batman, Spiderman, and Superman are perennial favorites, and patterns for these costumes are easy to find and make.

If you wish to purchase your costume patterns, go to a traditional fabric and sewing supply store. Virtually every pattern book has a costume section where you can browse for the latest in costume fashions and trends.

Accessories

After you have your costume completed, you will still need to select accessories and props: things like wigs, hats, shoes, belts, jewelry, makeup, and other accessories to make your costume complete. Garage sales and thrift stores are a great source of inexpensive costume accessories you can use to make your costume truly special and unique.

Care

Always make your costumes out of the very best materials you can afford to use. After the holiday or the party is over, inspect the costume for stains or tears and repair any damage or have it cleaned before you put it away until the next time.

History of Costume Jewelry

Humans have hung necklaces around their necks and rings around their wrists since the beginning of history. During the last hundred years or so, fashion and technology have combined to make some of the most beautiful costume jewelry known to humankind.

Costume jewelry made over the last hundred years is nearly as beautiful and spectacular as genuine jewelry made of precious metals like platinum, gold, and silver, and precious gemstones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires. Costume jewelry has evolved through the years, as can be seen by reviewing the history of this fashion tradition.

Roaring Twenties

The 1920s and 1930s saw an era of Art Deco jewelry, featuring jet black stones, white platinum and silver metal, and symmetrical and geometric shapes. This period in costume jewelry is characterized by pendant necklaces, bangle bracelets, jeweled accessories like cigarette holders and pillboxes, and long, dangling earrings.

Retro Modern Period

Plastic was king of costume jewelry from about 1935 until well into the early 1950s. Indeed, plastic Bakelite bangle bracelets and Bakelite bead necklaces are sought after today as collectible jewelry because of its vivid colors and timeless modern design sensibilities. This era saw plastics formed into fanciful shapes, like sunbursts, bows, daisies, horses, and ballerinas, often with twinkling rhinestones set into patterns on bracelets, earrings, and necklaces.

Contemporary Modern Period

Costume jewelry made between about 1945 and 1960 was tailored and sophisticated. Refinements in the jewelry of the 1940s and 1950s meant smaller pieces. Themed pieces became popular, like animal pins with Poodles and Scottish terriers. Christmas tree pins also enjoyed great popularity, as did other themed jewelry for holidays like Easter, Halloween, and Valentine's Day.

Sparkle has always been popular on costume jewelry, with rhinestones and their descendants, cubic zirconium, often found embedded in rings and earrings. Today, these kitschy pieces are highly sought after by collectors.

Mid-priced wristwatches are a great example of a costume jewelry item that is highly collectible and growing more valuable with every season. Look for chunky men's watches with brands like Bulova, Omega, Seiko, Rolex, and Elgin.

Where to Find Vintage Jewelry

The best place to find these vintage jewelry pieces is on the secondhand market. Online classified and auction sites like craigslist, eBay, and overstock offer many fun costume jewelry pieces. A recent eBay search turned up 2,554 costume jewelry items for sale! Estate sales are also an excellent source of secondhand costume jewelry, as are antique floors and private sellers.

Costumes Would Not be Costumes Without Costume Hats!

When you think of female costumes, not matter what the occasion, you cannot help but think of two of the most prevalent accessories: masks, and costume hats. Indeed, there are very few costumes that do not have either one thing or the other. You prefer the latter, and thus need some costume hat ideas.

The Costume: A Victorian Lady

Many women love to dress up as Victorian ladies, and part of the reason is because of the beautiful costume hats that go along with them! For example, if you want to be an aristocratic lady, you might want to choose a large costume hat with the brim turned down and the top adorned with feathers.

The Costume: A Flapper

Another popular costume that many women like to wear is the flapper costume. This costume does not really have a costume hat, but rather a band with a feather attached to it. However, to choose the costume of an aristocratic 1920s woman is to choose a costume hat that is rounded, with the brim pushed up against the forehead.

The Costume: A Cowgirl

For those women who have a love of the Old West, a cowgirl outfit is their outfit of choice. Of course, the obvious hat to wear is a cowboy hat, but it is how they choose to decorate it that is the most interesting. For example, the brim might be decorated with rhinestones, or feathers.

The Costume: A Medieval Woman

Women who are especially fond of historic costumes love to dress in the gowns of medieval Europe. The hats from this particular time period are rather ornate. Specifically, the outline of the hats are triangular, and the bottom is generally a long piece of fabric in the form of a habit

For More Information

If you would like more information on the kinds of hats you can wear with your costume, then all you have to do is go to your local costume store. There, even if you do not find a hat that you would like to wear, you can still get ideas.

Remember that it is best to purchase a hat in person rather than on the internet. Since every person's head is a different size, there are corresponding hat sizes. Make sure you do not purchase a hat only to find that it is too small! Thus, with the proper research, you are sure to find a hat that will beautifully compliment your outfit.

How to Create and Make Your Own Costume Designs

You have often gone to a clothing store and gasps at the price of a simple outfit. You think to yourself that it would be so easy to make the outfit yourself. Well, the same goes for costumes, because costumes are the same as clothes – just more decorative! The next time you are in need of a costume, you can make your own costume designs.

Costume Designs Begin with a Simple Sketch

All you need to get your costume designs that much closer to being an actual costume is a pencil and a piece of paper. Start sketching various ideas you might have, and experiment with different color contrasts. For the coloring part, the ideal materials to use are colored pencils.

Once you have a costume design that you are especially happy with, the next step is to get your measurements. Make sure you measure your arms, legs, neck, head (for a hat) torso, waist, and hips. Of course, if your costume design is rather straightforward, you might not need so many measurements.

The next step is perhaps the most precise, and the most interesting. Go to your local fabric store and select the bolts of cloth that you would like to incorporate into your costume design. The next step is to have each bolt of cloth cut so that you have the necessary yards of fabric that you need. If you are unsure of this step, ask the person cutting the fabric for their advice.

Once you have all the fabric measured out, the next step is to sew it. Make sure that you have a sewing machine for this purpose. Take you time stitching each piece, so that you do not have any loose threads or bunched up material.

All of the pieces of the costume having been sewn together, the next step is to try on your costume. You will need an extra person nearby if you get stuck in the costume for any reason. If you feel comfortable in the costume, then you are all done. However, if parts of the costume are too tight, spend some extra time doing alternations.

If you would like more information on various designs, simply search the internet. The various costume websites that are available will give you ideas. Also, there are some sites that sell costume patterns for a nominal fee. With the proper research, you are sure to make a costume that is beautiful and comfortable.
